Promotion/relegation explained

How the Structure Works

The ODPL works on a pyramid structure across 10 levels of competition, with each level comprising of a different number of divisions.

Promotion and relegation is a competitive league structure that enhances the excitement and stakes within sports, including darts. In this model, teams or players that perform well in a lower division are afforded the opportunity to ascend to a higher division, while those that underperform in the top division face the risk of dropping down. This system not only maintains a dynamic competition but also allows for fresh talent to emerge at the highest levels, fostering both ambition and resilience.

Depending on the league you are in, a different number of players get promoted and relegated into the levels above and below, to ensure fair competition across the board.

We have capacity for up to 16 players in each division, 256 in total. However, as we build and grow the league, the number of players in each division changes. Due to this, we have a different league format in each division, with a minimum of 14 games per division and a maximum of 16 games.

There are no playoffs or finals in league play, apart from promotion and relegation playoffs. These change depending on the league but are usually a one off game between the player in the final spot for promotion or relegation and the player directly on the bubble.

Also depending on your division’s level, you will be entered in a divisional cup. These cups are a straight knockout format where you play against the other divisions around yours, drawn randomly and can often throw up some unexpected results.
